ABOUT OUR APPROACH
Our approach, tried and true, brings real change to young men. It is heart-wrenching to witness the challenging circumstances and daily environments many of our nation's youth face. Nevertheless, we remain passionate and optimistic, for we have found a solution that works for these young men. Each week, our mentors appear at middle schools, high schools, and community centers, creating a community of men who listen, encourage, and empower teenage boys - these groups are called J GroupsOur community-based mentoring strategy offers boys an array of positive male role models who show up consistently, speak candidly about their struggles as men, ask the boys what kind of man they aspire to be, acknowledge their strengths, provide support when they falter, and encourage them to become the men they desire to be.We are resolute in our commitment to extend this opportunity to every boy in need.

You may also create
your own account using the link below. Sterling Volunteers provides all required consent and release
documentation for their background investigations as part of the process.Sterling Volunteers External LinkVolunteer Background Checks B2M maintains a policy that cost is not a barrier to participation. The organization is prepared to pay the cost of a volunteer’s background check if needed. The Sterling Volunteers website provides users an option to pay all or part of the background check expense. We appreciate those who can cover some or all of their background check payment. If you can’t afford it, that’s okay.No one is turned away from providing B2M valuable mentoring service due to lack of funds.Estimated costs:Basic Cost is $39.00

Background Search Process
Using the link provided above, login to the Sterling Volunteers and create your account. You’ll be asked to share personal identification information, including your SSN, resident addresses for the last 7 years, and any aliases or previous names. After the reports are compiled, B2M will review the data and decide if you’re eligible to volunteer. You’ll
receive an email with the result of the decision. The final step in the procedure is to fill out the attached
personal risk history questionnaire. Since all background check processes are imperfect, the
questionnaire adds another layer of security. We understand this information is private, and it will be
treated with confidentiality.
All of us make mistakes in our lives and sometimes they appear in our documented personal history. Part
of what we model for youth is confronting our imperfections, learning from our struggles, accepting our past, and taking action to do our best to live healthy and responsible lives.Prior convictions for drug offenses, DUI, tax delinquency, etc., will not exclude you from participation in B2M programs. A history of violence, threats, abuse, or sexual predation will prevent you from being allowed to participate.Other convictions may raise concerns and lead to a request for clarity.
Driving for B2M may be affected by your driving record along with your level of insurance coverage. This
contingency is covered by a separate process and does not affect the results of your background check. It takes courage to open one’s past for this purpose. And we care about your privacy. We also hope you’ll
agree the effort is worth it to ensure safety and a positive experience for youth in our programs. Thanks for helping us make our programs safe!

ARCHETYPES | CONTAINERIZATION | SAFETY
ARCHETYPES
The King, Lover, Warrior, and Magician. Four archetypes of teenage masculinity, each representing a different facet of what it means to come of age. The King, a symbol of leadership, wisdom, and compassion. The Lover, a symbol of passion, creativity, and self-expression. The Warrior, a symbol of courage, discipline, and self-control. And the Magician, a symbol of insight, transformation, and healing.
KING
The light side of the King archetype represents maturity, responsibility, wisdom, and leadership. A man who embodies this archetype is able to provide guidance, direction, and protection to those around him. He is compassionate, just, and fair, and seeks to create a better world for himself and others. The shadow side of the King archetype represents authoritarianism, abuse of power, and tyranny. A man who embodies this shadow may be rigid, dictatorial, and oppressive, seeking to control others for his own benefit. He may be overly focused on his own ego and personal gain, ignoring the needs and well-being of those around him.
LOVER
The light side of the Lover archetype represents passion, creativity, and connection. A man who embodies this archetype is able to express himself freely and connect with others in meaningful ways. He is able to experience pleasure, joy, and beauty in life, and to share these experiences with those around him.The shadow side of the Lover archetype represents addiction, obsession, and emotional instability. A man who embodies this shadow may be overly focused on his own pleasure, disregarding the needs and feelings of others. He may struggle to form deep and meaningful relationships, and may turn to addictive behaviors to cope with his emotions.
WARRIOR
The light side of the Warrior archetype represents courage, discipline, and self-control. A man who embodies this archetype is able to face challenges and overcome obstacles with bravery and determination. He is able to defend himself and others, and to fight for what he believes in.The shadow side of the Warrior archetype represents aggression, violence, and sadism. A man who embodies this shadow may be overly aggressive and violent, using force to solve problems and impose his will on others. He may enjoy inflicting pain on others, and may be prone to bullying and intimidation.
MAGICIAN
The light side of the Magician archetype represents insight, transformation, and healing. A man who embodies this archetype is able to see beyond the surface and understand the deeper meaning of things. He is able to transform himself and others, and to heal emotional and spiritual wounds. The shadow side of the Magician archetype represents manipulation, deception, and control. A man who embodies this shadow may use his knowledge and power to manipulate and control others for his own benefit. He may be dishonest and deceptive, using his abilities to exploit and harm others.
FLUID EMOTIONAL CONTEXT
These archetypes are not fixed or immutable, but rather fluid and dynamic. As a young man grows and matures, he may find that he identifies more strongly with one archetype than another, or that his understanding of each archetype changes over time. By embracing these archetypes and striving to integrate them into his own identity, a young man can develop a healthy and balanced sense of masculinity, one that is grounded in wisdom, compassion, courage, and creativity. And as he continues on his journey of self-discovery, he will find that these archetypes continue to guide and inspire him, helping him to become the best version of himself that he can be.
CONTAINERIZATION
Building a safe container is essential for any group process, as it provides a space for individuals to feel heard, seen, and supported. This containerization process involves being clear and present, checking in and out of the process, and utilizing agreed-upon tools and processes.
Being clear and present means that each member of the group should be fully present and focused on the task at hand. This requires active listening, open-mindedness, and the willingness to communicate honestly and authentically. By being clear and present, group members are better able to understand each other's perspectives, needs, and concerns, and can work together more effectively.Checking in and out of the process is another important aspect of containerization. This involves taking the time to connect with each other at the beginning and end of each session, sharing any updates or changes in personal circumstances, and setting intentions and expectations for the work ahead. This creates a sense of community and fosters a sense of trust and safety within the group.
SAFETY
Building a safe container is essential for any group process, as it provides a space for individuals to feel heard, seen, and supported. This containerization process involves being clear and present, checking in and out of the process, and utilizing agreed-upon tools and processes.

MENTOR PROCESS
As mentors for young men in our community we must face our own work, be present and capable of focus during mentoring. We seek to support each other using agreed-upon curriculum to process our work together, and support each other to check in on one another in order to maintain a healthy balance of process both inside and outside of mentoring. Part of a healthy ecosystem is an open and honest feedback loop that allows anyone and everyone in a group to be heard and make impact in a meaningful way.
JMEN PROCESS
As a community, we prioritize creating a safe container that fosters an environment of trust and openness. However, it is important to acknowledge that we are also subject to mandatory reporting rules, which require us to report any instances of harm or abuse that may occur within the group.Mandatory reporting is a legal requirement that applies to certain professions and situations, including those that involve working with minors or vulnerable adults. These rules vary by jurisdiction, but in general, they require individuals to report any instances of abuse or harm to the appropriate authorities, such as law enforcement or child protective services. While mandatory reporting may seem at odds with our goal of creating a safe container, it is actually an important component of that process. By clearly defining the rules around mandatory reporting, we are able to ensure that everyone in the group is aware of their legal obligations and can act accordingly if necessary.
